PVC vs Teslin Plastic Cards:
Plastic cards find a wide range of applications. From ID cards to business cards, plastic is used for card making in a big way. And while the vast majority of cards are made from PVC, a lot of other materials can also be used for it. Teslin, for instance, is a major competitor of PVC in card manufacturing.
Teslin is a synthetic substrate possessing properties that are ideal for ID cards and surpass those found in many natural or synthetic materials. Teslin plastic cards were first introduced in the mid-1980s, and since then it has been widely used in the production of gift cards, promotional cards, membership cards, and more.
There are some specific advantages of using Teslin cards over PVC. Though both are widely used, and PVC finds even more card applications, Teslin is a close competitor due to several reasons. Let’s find out what Teslin has got to offer.
What is Teslin?
Teslin is a synthetic paper material that is flexible, waterproof, highly printable, and tear-resistant. It is often used in the ID badge industry because its flexible surface accepts dye-based inkjet printing and other optional offset printing and laser printing.
Teslin is also a common substrate in American driver’s licenses. The genuine Teslin cards are offset printed with rainbow, Guilloche, and variable-size micro-text with fine detailed secure printing. The personalization of Teslin cards is usually done by a color laser printer. After printing, the card is laminated, adding additional security features such as embossing and holographic lamination.
Benefits of Teslin Cards
Although Teslin may not be the ideal choice for every card application, there are several reasons why you can consider using Teslin:
Durability: Due to Teslin’s high ink absorption, the printed image is “locked” to resist stains and wear. Also, the Teslin substrate makes the laminate ten times stronger than other synthetic materials, according to the manufacturer. This means that any lamination applied to the material will resist peeling while providing superior flexibility.
Appearance: The same small voids that help lock in the image also provide brilliant color reproduction, while protecting variable data, such as barcodes, from damage that may change the function of the card.
Magnetic stripe/RFID protection: The micro-pores in Teslin absorb static electricity accumulation to further protect magnetic stripes and other embedded electronic products. They are also buffered and insulated.
Security: Teslin ID cards and badges are difficult to copy, and can be combined with multiple security functions, especially when combined with PVC or other materials. These features include laser engraving, high-resolution color photography, and security markings.
PVC or polyvinyl chloride cards have long been in use and meet the standards set by the authorities. However, they easily wear away and lasts for fewer days than Teslin cards. If you need a throwaway card, PVC might be your ideal choice. PVC cards also cost less and thus that’s another reason to consider it.
